Ware, the son of a well-known Boston surgeon, graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1856. He volunteered with the Sanitary Commission at the start of the war, and joined the 44th Massachusetts as a Surgeon in 1862. Ware died of pneumonia while serving in North Carolina, most likely brought on by overwork. His colleagues mourned the loss of this young and dedicated surgeon.
