John Forney Zacharias – Confederate Surgeon
Born: December 2, 1837, in Frederick, Maryland
Served: Assistant Surgeon, 1863 to 1865
Died: August 16, 1904, in Cumberland, Maryland
Zacharias left Frederick, Maryland in 1862, and by the summer of 1863 was serving as an Assistant Surgeon at Danville (Virginia) General Hospital No. 2. Later in the war he was transferred to the Army of Tennessee where he served at Shipp Hospital. Zacharias successfully experimented with the use of maggots to remove dead tissue in cases of hospital gangrene.
