George N. Holmes – Confederate Surgeon

Born: ca. 1821, in Daviess County, Kentucky
Served: Assistant Surgeon and Chief Hospital Surgeon, 1862 to 1865
Died: January 21, 1877, in Macon, Georgia
Holmes was a highly-skilled and respected surgeon who attended the University of Louisville medical school but does not appear to have graduated. He began his military service as Assistant Surgeon for a cavalry regiment and moved rapidly upward, ending his military career as Chief Surgeon of hospitals in Macon, Georgia. Post-war, he continued to practice in Macon until his death.
