Taste Civil War history with this new partnership between the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and Tenth Ward Distillery!
This is the first in a series of three events in the “Brinton’s Brandy” series with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and Tenth Ward Distillery. These two Frederick-based organizations are using locally sourced ingredients and local history to create a “taste of history” for our supporters. Purchasing the “Brinton’s Brandy” package includes admission to exclusive events, tastings, and hands-on experiences, as well the only way to reserve a bottle of “Brinton’s Brandy.”
The package is $65 and includes everything listed below – a value of more than $100.
We will gather first in the National Museum of Civil War Medicine at on December 7, 2017 for a tasting, presentation, and discussion about brandy’s importance in America’s bloodiest conflict.
Brandy was widely used in the operating rooms and hospital wards of the conflict and was used for its stimulating qualities and its comforting warmth. It was a favorite among Civil War soldiers and surgeons alike. Join us as we introduce “Brinton’s Brandy” and begin our partnership.
Purchasing the “Brinton’s Brandy” package also includes access to these events:
January 21, 2018: Join us at Tenth Ward Distilling Company as we bottle Brinton’s Brandy. You will get the opportunity to hand label and stamp your own bottle. Participants will also be able to join a complementary tour of the distillery accompanied by a tasting of their spirits.
February 13, 2018: Join us at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine to celebrate the conclusion of the first partnership between the Museum and Tenth Ward. We will tour the galleries of the museum and taste samples of Tenth Ward’s spirits in the “most haunted building in Frederick.”
The package also includes ONE bottle of “Brinton’s Brandy,” as well as other items from the museum and the distillery. A membership with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine is included with the package, giving exclusive access to events and deals at the organization’s three locations in Frederick, Washington, DC, and Antietam National Battlefield.

More about Brinton’s Brandy: “Named for the innovative surgeon who found that giving small bribes of cherry brandy assisted him in his role as the first curator of the Army Medical Museum during the Civil War, Brinton’s Brandy is the first in a series of spirit collaborations with Tenth Ward Distilling Company and the Civil War Medicine Museum. Tenth Ward is dedicated to reviving our region’s boozey history and has a special fondness for the Civil War so it made for a perfect match! Modeled after a traditional Civil War era spirit recipe Brinton’s brandy is an apple brandy distilled from McCutcheon’s cider and infused with local cherries. While this spirit would have been called a “cherry brandy” at that time it typically would have been based with an apple brandy or rye whiskey then infused with cherries after distillation.”
