Get a demonstration of Civil War surgery on this livestream program
Join us on Thursday, February 24 at 1:00 PM on Facebook for a livestream program hosted by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. You can tune in by visiting Facebook.com/CivilWarMed at the scheduled time. John Lustrea, Director of Education, will provide a demonstration of Civil War surgery.
You won’t want to miss this livestream where John Lustrea will amputate a fake leg using a sharp reproduction Civil War surgical kit. Along the way he will describe the process and how it is both similar and different to modern amputation procedures. Additionally, he will cover how surgeons arrived at the decision to amputate as often as they did and the revolutionary system of medical evacuation that got soldiers to field hospitals so quickly.
John Lustrea is the Director of Education and the Website Manager at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. He earned his Master’s degree in Public History from the University of South Carolina. Lustrea has previously worked at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park during the summers of 2013-2016.
