Anderson Ruffin Abbott – Union Surgeon
Born: April 7, 1837 in Buxton, Ontario
Served: From September, 1863 through 1866 he worked several hospitals in Washington D.C. serving USCT and former enslaved people, though most of his time was at Freedman’s Hospital.
Died: December 29, 1913 in Toronto, Ontario
Anderson Ruffin Abbott attended Oberlin College in Ohio and then returned to Toronto, where he served an apprenticeship with Dr. Alexander Augusta. He was licensed to practice medicine in 1861 by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the state medical society. He then began classes at Trinity College, University of Toronto, but had not yet been graduated when he obtained an appointment as Acting Assistant Surgeon with the United States Colored Troops and moved to the United States, where he was assigned to Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.
