GROUP TOURS AND PROGRAMS
The NMCWM offers the following tour programs for your school, professional or tour group. Programs run from sixty to ninety minutes and include a total of nine galleries with six full immersion exhibits. Each gallery and exhibit tells a different facet of the story of the care of the sick and wounded in the American Civil War. Docents encourage participation through question and answer periods and hands-on activities. Each tour will be targeted for the interest level of the touring group, from grade school through college level, or from the casual visitor to the hardcore Civil War enthusiast. *Docent-guided tours can be arranged for groups of 10 or more, by contacting the Museum's Education Department.

The Museum Gallery Tour
A general tour of the NMCWM that outlines the history of medical education, military recruiting, camp life, medical evacuation, veterinary medicine, combat medicine, general hospitals, dentistry, naval medicine and embalming. This is a recommended tour for the first time visitor, grades 5 and above.
Breaking Down Myths
This tour focuses on the role that literature and film have had in the development of modern attitudes toward medical practices during the Civil War. The images of the medical service as detailed in films such as "Gone With the Wind" and "Dances With Wolves" will be discussed and compared to the true, historical record. This tour is recommended for grades 10 and above, and for students who have a background in film or literature dealing with the period.
The Role of the Surgeon
This tour specifically focuses on the duties, hardships and triumphs of military surgeons during the war. Special attention will be given to the evolution of disease treatment, patient management, sanitary precautions and medical research during the war years. This program is recommended for grades 8 and above.
Unsung Heroes
Nurses, hospital stewards, laundresses and civilian volunteers were all part of the medical systems of both the Union and Confederate armies. Unfortunately, many of the stories of the contributions and hardships of these participants have been lost to time. This tour will be highlighted with historical quotes that detail the service of these caregivers. Recommended for grades 5 and above.
