Edited By: Peter Josyph
The Civil War Letters of John Vance Lauderdale, M.D.
The Wounded River documents the experiences of Dr. John Lauderdale as a surgeon aboard the U.S. Army hospital ship D.A. January during the Civil War. A New York civilian contract surgeon, Lauderdale operated on hundreds of Confederate and Union wounded throughout the war. The young doctor’s clear writing style and great compassion for his patients on both sides gives great insight in the impacts of modern warfare upon humanity. Lauderdale explains his motives for volunteering, as well as his impressions of the D.A. January, Confederate morale, the Abolitionist cause, and black slavery.
