Sally Louisa Tompkins was the only woman to be openly commissioned an officer in either army during the Civil War and established Robertson Hospital in Richmond, Virginia following the First Battle of Manassas. Dearest of Captains is a narrative poem that traces Tompkins’ life in three parts. Often called the “Florence Nightingale of the Confederacy,” Sally Tompkins is a significant hero of American military medicine.
