The Pry House Field Hospital Museum occupies the historic Philip Pry Farm on Antietam National Battlefield and enables the visitor to experience the Battle of Antietam and a range of historically-based programs and activities. A field hospital exhibit in the house and barn help visitors discover the early concepts of emergency medical care and evacuation, and the ways the war affected the community surrounding the battlefield. General Admission

General Admission to the Pry House Field Hospital Museum allows visitors to explore the former headquarters of General McClellan, Union Commander of the Army of the Potomac and Medical Director Dr. Jonathan Letterman.

Hours of Operation

From Memorial Day through September:
Open Thursdays thru Mondays.  Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays though you can still visit the property and enjoy the interpretive panels and the beautiful overlook.

Open Saturday and Sunday
11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Closed January, February and March.

Parking for motor coaches, cars and vans is available directly in front of the Phillip Pry Barn.

Accessibility

The Pry House Field Hospital is owned and maintained by the United States National Park Service (NPS.) NPS considers the Antietam Battlefield and its surrounding sites to be handicap accessible. The Pry Barn is ramp accessible as is the first level of the Pry House.

Groups

Guided tours of the Pry House Field Hospital Museum can be arranged for groups with a minimum of 10 people. The length of a guided tour is 60 minutes; we ask that you please plan accordingly.

Late Arrival and Cancellation Policy for Groups

Groups that arrive late will receive a condensed tour. If you need to cancel your visit, please e-mail the reservation coordinator at reservations@civilwarmed.org or call the Museum at 301-695-1864.

Inclement Weather Policy for Groups

In the event of inclement weather and your group is unable to arrive safely at the Museum for your tour, please contact the Museum to cancel your visit. We will attempt to re-schedule your visit, rescheduling a tour will be based on rates and availability. In the event of Museum closure you will be contact by a member our Guest Services Staff.

Schedule a Visit

To schedule a guided group tour please submit a reservation request form online or by fax to 301-695-6823. By submitting a completed reservation request you are not guaranteed a reservation. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine Reservation Coordinator will work with you to best accommodate your group to plan a visit, we ask that reservation requested be submitted at least four weeks prior to the desire date of your visit. Once the date and time of your guided tour have been confirmed with the Museum’s Reservation Coordinator, you will receive a confirmation letter with check-in information.

Museum Guidelines

  • Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all time.
  • Food and Drink are prohibited in the galleries, water fountains can be found on both floors of the museum.
  • Please silence your cell phones while in the galleries, phone calls can be made in the Lobby.
  • Please note that exhibits may be alarmed, be mindful of this when visiting with small children
  • Filming within the galleries is strictly prohibited.
  • Flash Photography is prohibited in the galleries.
  • Please visit the NPS Visitor Use Guidelines for additional park regulations

How to Get There:

From Washington DC:
Take I-270 towards Frederick. Then take Exit 32, I-70 West, towards Hagerstown. Take Exit .49, US 40 Alt. Braddock Heights/Middletown turn left at stop light. Travel through Middletown, over South Mountain and enter Boonsboro. Then turn left at the stoplight, MD Rt. 34, Shepherdstown Pike. Drive about 6 miles, Pry House is on the right just after Planters Lane. Turn right onto the lane and drive back to house. Park in front of the barn, and take the path around to the entrance.

From Baltimore:

From Hagerstown:
Take MD Route 65 South towards Sharpsburg. Travel into town and turn left at the stop sign, MD Route 34, Boonsboro Pike. Travel over the Antietam Creek, the entrance for the house is on the left almost at the crest of a large hill. Turn right onto the lane and drive back to house. Park in front of the barn, and take the path around to the entrance.
