 iment’s ordeal in the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam. The newly   min
 ted 145<sup>th</sup> PVI was spared the slaughter of America’s bloodiest  
  day\, only to be detailed the gruesome task of burying Antietam’s dead on
  the   battlefield\, a nightmarish introduction to war. The regiment spent
  the next   several cold\, rainy weeks on Bolivar Heights without tents\, 
 proper equipment\,   or adequate medicine\, losing more than half their me
 n to disease.</p>
